GREAT BRITAIN 2D TWO PENCE BLUE
The 2d two pence blue stamp was first issued in 1840, the stamp had no white lines above the words two penny and below postage words. Only 2 plates were used plates 1 and 2.
In 1841 a new 2d blue stamp was issued with white lines added above and below postage and two penny words. Again 2 plates were used, plates 3 and 4.
Plate 3 was almost always cancelled with a black Maltese cross postmark, any that are franked with an 1844 postmark are rarer and have more value.
Plate 4 was mainly cancelled with an 1844 numeral duplex type postmark, again maltese cross postmarks are rarer.
In 1854 a new issue of the 2d blues was introduced with official perforations. Perf 14 and 16. Small or large crown watermark.
Plates 4, 5 and 6 were used. These can be identified in the same way as the penny red imperfs, check letters and top corner stars. Plus the added advantage of perf 14 and 16 plus small and large crown watermarks. The large crown watermarks were used for the one penny and two penny for the first time on the new perforated stamps.
In 1858 a new issue was introduced with the plate numbers engraved in the left and right margins of the stamps.
Plates used for general use were plates 7, 8, 9, 12, 13, 14 and 15. Plate 12 is the rarer and of greater value.
THE COLOUR OF INK USED IN THE CANCELS IS VERY IMPORTANT WHEN VALUEING ALL LINE ENGRAVED STAMPS. BLACK BEING THE MOST COMMON.
